ABSTRACT:

This study examined the feasibility of integrating acoustic technologies (i.e. hydroacoustics and telemetry) to measure fish activity levels and behaviour in free ranging fish. The study demonstrated that acoustic tags could be successfully detected and recorded using acoustic transducers. Furthermore, there was no difference in the detection ability between tags in fish and tags suspended externally in the water column. Further research however, is needed to refine acoustic data collection to facilitate identification and location of multiple tags in a pre-defined space. Authors recommend that next steps should include recent advances in multi-beam technologies (data collection and analyses) with coded acoustic telemetry to provide the required horizontal and vertical sampling necessary to monitor individual behaviour and movement with groups of fish.
